During my six-year tenure at India HIV/AIDS Alliance in New Delhi, I led the organization through a period of intense growth in influence and impact. By using strategic communications and visual media, we were able to increase awareness and understanding of our mission and address head on some of the barriers and social prejudices that contribute to the marginalization that drives HIV epidemics and keeps people out of care.
This portfolio is a selection of the communications and advocacy work I oversaw while in India, reflecting our organization’s sustained collaboration with patient communities and an array of talented creatives, including photographers, filmmakers, artists, and designers.
Even though funding for video documentation of our work was limited, we were able to develop longer video productions, often through collaboration. These films include one of the first documenting women who inject drugs in India, another exploring the remarkable impact of ten years of access to free antiretroviral treatment, and several advocating for rights protections for sexual and gender minorities. Working with limited budgets, we developed techniques that allowed us to make promotional films using our existing photograph archive, essentially creating short videos of slideshows. This approach was low-cost and enabled us to create video collaterals for specific events and global visibility days quickly and in-house. (Production by the Communications Team at Alliance India.)
